SUMMARY:Women in Aviation and Space History- National Air and Space Museum Virtual Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Exhibit \nNational Air and Space Museum visitors frequently ask\, “Where are the women pilots?” The answer is that they are in nearly every gallery of the Museum. \nAlthough women have flown since 1908\, nearly all of them were restricted to general aviation\, i.e. private planes\, or support jobs\, (prior to the 1970s) and our exhibits reflect those historical roles. However\, women have now gained full access to military and commercial cockpits\, as well as the Space Shuttle and aerospace technology\, and as we update old and create new exhibits\, we will review and include the growing contributions of women throughout the Museum. \nThe online exhibit was created in the early 2000s to document women in the galleries. The women represented in the National Mall Building and the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center are not limited to this list.

SUMMARY:Inclusion and Innovation: A Virtual Roundtable Discussion
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \nOn March 24\, at Noon Eastern\, ITT and the National Women’s Hall of Fame are collaborating to hold a virtual panel discussion emphasizing the themes of Innovation and Inclusion. \nThe prestigious panel consists of 3 Inductees into the Hall\, and the grand-daughter of deceased Inductee Henrietta Lacks.  Two of the Inductees\, Jean Kilbourne and Carlotta LaNier were inducted in 2015; Sarah Deer was inducted in 2019\, and Henrietta Lacks\, represented by Jeri Lacks-Whye\, was inducted in 2020. All Inductees have played a major role in both elements of this panel’s theme. \nJean Kilbourne transformed the image of women in advertising in the 1960s\, connecting public health issues with a lack of media literacy\, paving the way for the solution of issues such as violence against women\, and addiction. \nCarlotta LaNier was the youngest member of the Little Rock Nine\, who integrated the Little Rock\, Arkansas central school in 1957. This was a catalyzing event in the Civil Rights movement of that era\, presaging Brown vs. the Board of Education. \nSarah Deer \, a Native American lawyer\, advocates on behalf of survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence in Native American communities\, and is credited for her role in the 2013 reauthorization of the “Violence against Women Act”. \nHenrietta Lacks\, suffering from terminal cancer in 1951\, had her “HeLa” cancer cells removed and without her or her family’s knowledge sent to a tissue lab\, where they doubled every 2 days unlike other cells which died.  They have been used for research since\, enabling crucial studies and developments. Summit\, in collaboration with PBS LearningMedia (PBS’s free online learning platform)\, and in partnership with PBS’s flagship biography series American Masters\, WNET\, National Women’s History Museum\, National Council for the Social Studies\, National Council for History Education\, National Women’s Hall of Fame\, and National Women’s History Alliance\, to investigate why women are vastly underrepresented in U.S. history and social studies curriculum. The Where Are the Women? As part of the event\, PBS Digital Innovator All-Star high school teachers will demonstrate\, and answer audience questions about\, their creation and implementation of the Unladylike2020 collection on PBS LearningMedia\, lesson plans and curriculum that represent the accomplishments of women in history\, and are tailor-made for virtual\, in-person\, and hybrid learning.  \n   \nWinners of the My Hero Project’s 2020 Women Transforming Media Award\, Unladylike2020 Executive Producers Sandra Rattley and Charlotte Mangin\, were inspired to stage this national conversation after reading a National Women’s History Museum research report that analyzed K – 12 social studies standards for the 50 states and Washington\, D.C. The findings published in the Where are the Women? report said that\, out of 737 historical figures taught in the standard curriculum\, just 178\, or 24% are women\, including several fictional characters. 98 of the women appear in only 1 state standard; only 15 are taught in more than 10 states. Mangin states\, “The mission of the Unladylike2020 series was to expand how history is taught and understood across the country. We hope this summit will help activate significant educational change and provide long-overdue recognition of women’s contributions to U.S. history.” Rattley adds\, “It’s encouraging that so many national educational organizations have embraced this cause as a part of their efforts to ensure equal and accurate representation of diverse history makers.” Director of Education at the National Women’s History Museum\, Lori Ann Terjesen\, will provide a summary brief of the museum’s Where are the Women? research report at the summit.  \n   \nThe Where Are the Women? summit is free and open to the public. Teachers who participate will receive a 2-hour professional development credit for their attendance\, and all participants will get a free women’s history resource guide as a takeaway. She was elected board president at the 54th National Convention of the League of Women Voters in June of 2020 and will serve in this position until June 2022.\n\n\nTurner was elected to the League’s national board of directors in 2016 where she served on the Finance committee\, Governance Committee\, and chaired the Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee. DESCRIPTION:Three outstanding women will be honored by the National Women’s Hall of Fame at a “Keeper of the Flame” ceremony and reception on Monday December 17\, 2018\, to be held at Luminate\, 260 East Main Street\, Suite 6000\, Rochester NY at 6pm. This year’s honorees include Susan Houde-Walter\, President and CEO of LMD\, a certified woman owned small business in Rochester NY; Alexis Vogt\, Endowed Chair and Associate Professor of Optics at Monroe Community College\, a woman who is training the next generations in optical technology; and Carol Ritter Wright\, former D&C journalist and columnist\, and auctioneer extraordinaire who has raised many millions of dollars for non-profits in our region. A number of photonics industries\, the Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester\, as well as admiring individuals\, have generously sponsored these women. Hall Board president Betty M. Bayer will provide introductory and closing remarks at the ceremony\, and will introduce emcee Ginny Ryan\, WHAM TV News anchor who will read encomiums on each of the women\, outlining the accomplishments for which they are honored. \nA limited number of tickets to the ceremony and reception are available for $50\, and can be obtained online\, or by calling the Hall at 315-568-8060. SUMMARY:Bayer to Speak at Blackwell Dedication Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Professor of Women’s Studies Betty Bayer joins a panel of distinguished speakers for the unveiling of the historic plaque marking the hospital founded by Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell Class of 1849\, the first woman in America to receive her degree as a Doctor of Medicine. \nThe dedication ceremony\, hosted by the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation\, will begin at 6 p.m. on Monday\, May 14 at 58 Bleecker Street in New York\, N.Y.\, the site of The New York Infirmary for Women and Children\, the first hospital for women\, staffed by women\, and run by women. \nFollowing her graduation at the head of her class from Hobart’s precursor\, the medical school of Geneva College\, Blackwell not only founded the New York Infirmary for Women and Children but aided in the creation of its medical college. After returning to England\, she helped found the National Health Society\, was the first woman to be placed on the British Medical Register\, and taught at England’s first college of medicine for women. She was a pioneer in preventive medicine and in the promotion of antisepsis and hygiene and was responsible for the first chair of hygiene in any medical college. \nFind out more and register for the event. \n \nBayer is an expert on the intersections of women’s history\, psychology\, science\, religion and spirituality. She has explored the abolitionist and women’s rights movements\, and their common history in central New York. Recognized for her outstanding teaching\, Bayer received the Colleges’ Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award in 2004 and the Community Service Award in 2009. She has served as the chair of the Women’s Studies Program since 2001 and directed the Fisher Center for the Study of Women and Men from 2002 to 2009. Bayer serves as president of the board of directors of the National Women’s Hall of Fame where Dr. Blackwell is among the inaugural class of inductees named in 1973.
