DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to celebrate the opening of an evocative traveling exhibition at The National Women’s Hall of Fame. \nMary Church Terrell and The Traveling Griots: Exemplars of Black Womanhood \nHonoring the legacy of Hall of Fame inductee Mary Church Terrell\, this exhibition brings to life the vision and valor of Terrell and her contemporaries—trailblazing African American women who shaped the course of American civil rights and women’s suffrage history. \nRooted in the West African tradition of the griot—a revered storyteller\, historian\, and keeper of cultural memory—this immersive installation features life-size dolls dressed in stunning period attire\, each representing Terrell and her network of fellow pioneers in the struggle for equality. These women\, founders of the National Association of Colored Women and leaders in the movement for racial justice and gender equity\, come forth in this exhibit as modern-day griots whose wisdom\, strength\, and vision still speak to us today. \nThe exhibit is a collaborative effort between Oakwood University\, the International Black Women’s Public Policy Institute\, and the Jonathan Green Maritime Cultural Center at the University of South Carolina Beaufort. \nCreated by cultural historian\, educator and curator Dr. Kim Cliett Long\, the installation seeks to preserve\, elevate and inculcate as American history\, African American women’s history and heritage by embracing the griot tradition—reviving ancestral voices through artistic expression\, storytelling\, poetry\, and visual narrative. \nIn Mary Church Terrell’s own words: “Lifting As We Climb.” This exhibition invites visitors to witness how that guiding principle inspired a generation of women to lift a natio

DESCRIPTION:Leadership & Representation: Mary Church Terrell’s Black Feminism \nMary Church Terrell’s biographer\, Alison Parker\, discusses Terrell’s strategic use of respectability and fashion to assert Black women’s full humanity and equality. Terrell’s feminism and suffrage activism was based on her communicating the central reality that race and gender are intersecting and inseparable factors in Black women’s lives. \nMary Church Terrell was a tireless advocate for racial justice\, women’s rights\, and civil rights — a visionary leader whose work spanned nearly a century. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about her unrelenting fight for equality and what her story teaches us today. \nAbout our speaker:  \nAlison M. Parker is Richards Professor of American History at the University of Delaware. She has research and teaching interests in U.S. women’s and gender history\, African American history\, and legal history. She majored in art history and history at the University of California\, Berkeley and earned a PhD from the Johns Hopkins University. In 2017-2018\, Parker was an Andrew W. Mellon Advanced Fellow at the James Weldon Johnson Institute at Emory University. \nAmong other books\, Parker is author of Articulating Rights: Nineteenth-Century American Women on Race\, Reform\, and the State (2010) and Purifying America: Women\, Cultural Reform\, and Pro-Censorship Activism\, 1873-1933 (1997). This year\, her biography\, Unceasing Militant: The Life of Mary Church Terrell\, was released by the University of North Carolina Press in a second edition paperback. Dr. Parker also serves as an editor of the Gender and Race in American History book series for the University of Rochester Press. \n
